SISTER DEIRDRE (DEDE) BYRNE is a religious sister of the Little Workers of the Sacred Hearts in Washington, D.C., and a retired colonel in the U.S. Army Medical Corps. As an Army and missionary surgeon, she has performed surgery on the ground after natural and man-made crises in Kenya, Afghanistan, Haiti, Iraq and Sudan. She currently serves as medical director of their free Physical Therapy and Eye Clinic at their convent, as well as a volunteer surgeon at the Catholic Charities Medical Clinic. In August 2020 she spoke boldly in defense of the preborn on national television to an audience of millions at the National RNC.

OUR SPECIAL GUEST HOST

DAVID BEREIT is the founder of the global 40 Days for Life movement and has been a prolific speaker across the U.S. and around the world, inspiring audiences as large as seventy thousand people. He has received many awards for his good work including the Henry Hyde Life Leadership Award, the Students for Life of America Defender of Life Award, and the Walk for Life West Coast St. Gianna Molla Award for Pro-Life Heroism. Starting as the executive director of the original Coalition for Life in College Station, TX, located at the Planned Parenthood facility which was directed by Abby Johnson, David co-founded 40 Days for Life in 2004 which went national in 2007 and then on to 63 nations around the world with over 1 million volunteers, 20,000 churches, and 7,440 campaigns which have led to 17,232 known babies saved, 206 abortion workers quitting, and 107 abortion facilities closing permanently. David now serves as a strategist for national and high-impact pro-life and faith-based organizations.

BANQUET SPEAKERS

MARK CAVALIERE is the Founder and Executive Director of the Southwest Coalition for Life which he started in 2015. With the support of the Las Cruces community, he quit his job the following year to focus his entrepreneurial drive into full-time pro-life ministry leading to 3 abortion centers closing in just over 3 years. Mark lives in Chaparral, NM with his wife Melissa and their five children.

JESSICA SIFUENTES is the Director of Operations for the Southwest Coalition for Life. She is a student of Fr. Richard Thomas and a tireless advocate for women and babies in El Paso. She organized the first 40 Days for Life campaign outside the new Planned Parenthood in El Paso, mobilizing dozens of churches and hundreds in a constant unbroken chain of peaceful prayer and fasting.

FR. MARK SALAS is the Pastor of Our Lady of Assumption Parish in El Paso, Texas. He also serves as the Associate State Chaplain for the Texas State Council of the Knights of Columbus, he sits on the Board of Directors for the Guiding Star El Paso pregnancy medical center, and Fr. Mark also assists with Rachel’s Vineyard retreats healing and forgiveness after abortion for both women and men.

MIKE SEIBEL is the founder and lead attorney at Abortion on Trial who has been working to systematically take down Albuquerque's late-term abortion industry. He also works to support and defend the pro-life movement, as well as for justice for women harmed by the abortion industry. Mike's work has quickly caught the attention of the nation and it often featured on LiveAction.

PASTOR VINCE TORRES is the President and Executive Director of the Family Policy Alliance of New Mexico, a public policy partner of Focus on the Family, as well as the Executive Pastor of Blaze Christian Fellowship Church in Santa Fe, NM. Vince works towards a vision of a nation where God is honored, religious freedom flourishes, families thrive and life is cherished.

Servant of Life Awards

It is our utmost honor to present the first Fr. Richard Thomas Servant of Life Awards to Gabriela Avila and Karen Cates. In 2003, Karen began pro-life outreach at UTEP and met Gaby. Together they started a student group Former Embryos for Life. As followers of Fr. Richard Thomas before he died in 2006, they began living humbly as pro-life missionaries. In 2011, Fr. Thomas’ ministry purchased a duplex directly behind the Hill Top abortion center. Throughout the next decade until 2020, Gaby and Karen lived behind Hill Top in secret, helping women and saving babies from abortion on a daily basis. Gaby worked with national pro-life organizations and leaders such as Abby Johnson, Lila Rose, and David Daleiden. When an abortion center opened in Las Cruces in 2014, Gaby went to help, recruiting and inspiring Mark Cavaliere to first get involved, who Karen later trained on the sidewalk. Together Karen and Gaby laid the foundation for the Southwest Coalition for Life and were instrumental in Hill Top’s closure. May God reward them for their years of Christ-like sacrifice as true Servants of Life.

Our Hero of the Year

When the COVID pandemic started, Brianne Escamilla lost her job, her partner, day care for her daughter Emily, and was facing eviction all in the same week... only to then discover that she was also pregnant. Pressured to get an abortion and feeling she had no other option, she reluctantly went to the abortion center in Santa Teresa where she met Brian, a Her Care Connection Referral Agent from the Southwest Coalition for Life. Brian connected her to free, loving, life-affirming care and resources, including our new Hero Fund which helped cover her rent. After visiting a pregnancy center Brianne considered adoption, but saw that Emily was already bonding with her baby brother, so she chose to parent. Baby Emilio was just born on November 20. Brianne is now working her way through nursing school to help others the way God has helped her and also wants to volunteer for the Coalition for Life to help others choose life. We admire her for bravely being the hero for her children that God created her to be!

The SOUTHWEST COALITION FOR LIFE started in 2015 in response to an abortion center opening in Las Cruces, NM, the prior year. On December 31, 2016, the facility closed permanently. Since then, the Coalition has worked to unite the larger Borderland region and has been called one of the most high-impact local pro-life organizations in the nation, leading to now 3 local abortion facility closures in a span of 40 months.

Our MISSION is to empower YOU to help God end the violence of abortion, peacefully and prayerfully (without protests or politics!) across the Southwest by helping empower moms to be the heroes God created them to be. Join our movement to revolutionize the meaning of pro-life through our three proven and strategic areas of focus:

COMPASSIONATE OUTREACH

Help connect abortion-vulnerable moms and couples to free, loving, and life- affirming care through our innovative Her Care Connection interns, referral network, and our brand new Save the Storks mobile ultrasound bus to bring the life-saving power of free pregnancy testing and ultrasounds right to the front doors of local abortion corporations!

COMMUNITY ACTION

Activate the pro-life community through compassionate community prayer vigils including proven, biblical 40 Days for Life campaigns twice yearly and energizing public events.

PRO-ACTIVE EDUCATION

Engage and educate future generations through our pro-active youth presentations, special events, and training for the broader pro-life movement.

Help connect abortion-minded mothers and couples to the care they need to choose life.

“I'm so overwhelmed with your act of kindness and support. With the support of the Southwest Coalition for Life, you have restored my faith that there are 'angels' right here on Earth. I have been trying really hard to turn my life around and thanks to you I feel like my life is back on track for doing that. People don't believe in random acts of kindness, but I'm proof that it really happens. You are selfless and kind and your generosity and assistance will always be remembered and appreciated beyond words. So I just want to say thank you so very, very much for your help. May you be blessed today and always."

"What Mark and the team have put together—the level of research that he and the team have done, and in turn, the stunning life-saving results that they've seen—is nothing short of my dream for every community around the world. Indeed, anywhere where we've seen really good infrastructure on the ground, we have seen miracles in those communities. Having traveled across the country, visiting communities, activist organizations, and pregnancy centers, I can tell you that the Southwest Coalition for Life is easily one of the top life-saving ministries in the country."
